Buckle Up! The Battle's Just Beginning...

Tomorrow is election day. It is thought that the Democrats have an excellent chance of taking control of the House of Representatives, and also a chance of winning a majority in the Senate too.

Despite the high hopes, for any who have not voted early, voting tomorrow is crucial. For if the Democrats do not win control of Congress, American democracy is finished. There will be no obstacle to the complete erosion of democratic rule of law. Living under the continued control of the mad dictator and his ruthless minions will bring only more unbridled corruption, cruelty, economic ruin (except for them, of course), and unfettered persecution of any who oppose them.

Trump’s gangster regime is desperately pulling out all the stops to rig the results of this midterm election for Republicans and prime any who remain gullible to believe the Democrats are the ones who have cheated if the Republicans lose.

Trump’s Supreme Court has backed his effort to purge voter rolls despite the purge being knocked down by lower courts.

ICE has been investigating hundreds of organizations that help people register to vote and has been collecting tens of millions of voting records.

And Trump has signaled that he may well send the National Guard to seize voting machines in swing states.

Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed suit--before the election even takes place--to block Alaska from certifying the Democratic senate candidate if she wins. Though a lower court has denied that request, there is no guarantee of what could happen on appeal.

DOJ also has been harassing state election officials with the specter of criminal prosecution for alleged noncitizen voting.

On the other side, the pro-democracy movement is working hard to make Democratic wins so large that the Trump regime’s machinations will not have any chance of appearing credible.

The No Kings Coalition and others have brought together hundreds of grassroots organizations and labor unions to organize, lobby and campaign to save democracy.

Marc Elias’s law firm has been fighting the Trump regime’s moves in court and largely winning. Two Caveats though: (1) Trump has no qualms about ignoring or violating court decisions when it suits him; and (2) Trump’s Supreme Court has been overruling some of the lower court decisions.

Red states have been closing polling places in areas known to vote for Democrats, trying to make finding and getting to the correct polling station more difficult. Fortunately, the backlash to this maneuver has been strong, with masses of people walking together to the changed poll, to make sure they get to vote and vote early.

And citizens around the nation, even in red states, are finally starting to get wise to the open corruption, the liar’s promises never kept, and who is actually responsible for their economic pain. Even the races in Mississippi are in play.

The pundits seem to think that the Republican party is in for a devastating drubbing. Hopefully, that will pan out.

But no one should kid themselves. Winning this election is only winning the first battle in the war. Trump will likely still have a stranglehold on the executive branch for the next two years, and his fully owned Supreme Court Six will still back him. The Project 2025 creators, who were instrumental in bringing the nation to this autocratic cliff, will also not give up on trying to push us over it. Nor will their tech billionaire allies.

So pro-democracy Americans must not lose heart when a Democratic Congress cannot immediately undo the Trump regime’s ongoing damage to the nation. I am not suggesting that we all have patience, but rather, that we prepare even now for the next battle and the next. Whether that be Trump’s bogus attempts to prosecute election officials, challenges to election results, refusal to certify or seat newly elected Democratic representatives and senators, or whatever the regime's scheming minds come up with after that.

Gird your loins for the battles to come. And vote like your life depends upon it. Because it does.

Wow, well articulated, Jessie. I've already voted in the early vote. It is against the law to send the National Guard, ICE, or the military to a polling booth. Now I know how it must have felt like to live in the Soviet Union in it's early beginnings. We must keep fighting for justice and for our freedom!
